Principal investigator on the pCAS pump Oxygenator system. Mark has been Principal Investigator or co investigator for about 20 million dollars of US grants and NIH contracts.

Mark began his career in medical device development in 1988 as a Clinical Bioengineer responsible for various facets of the burgeoning mechanical circulatory support at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. This work included care of patients implanted with the Cardiowest total artificial heart as well as a cadre of ventricular assist devices including those from Novacor and Thoratec. It was during these years of direct clinical interaction with advanced medical technologies that Dr. Gartner began his interest in the unique design requirements for this class of medical products.
